We pondered the crime board for a short while longer, but we made no progress. Eventually, Lady Hardcastle stood.

‘Well, Flo dear, we can sit here all afternoon achieving nothing, I can take another cooling bath, or we can go and talk to one of the village Weryers ourselves. What do you favour?’

‘There’s a fourth option,’ I said. ‘We could interview Pat Swanton.’

‘Or that, yes. Although I’m not entirely sure where he might be on a Monday afternoon.’

‘Very well,’ I said. ‘Of the remaining options, the third seems the most entertaining.’

‘I do very much want a bath, though.’

‘No, we must take action and talk to a Weryer. But who? The inspector is already speaking to the local ones.’

‘He’s not talking to Bob Slocomb – the dairyman was absent from his list. We could pootle up to the dairy, have a quick word with Slocomb, and still be back to the village in time to join in with one of the inspector’s other interviews.’

‘He might not take too kindly to that.’

‘Pish and fiddlesticks. We are, as you so often observe, delightful. He’ll be pleased to see us.’

‘Very well,’ I said. ‘What about Slocomb?’

‘What about him?’

‘Will he be pleased to see us?’

‘I refer the honourable lady to my previous comment. Everyone is pleased to see us.’

I could quickly name more than a dozen people who would be decidedly displeased to see us, but I let it go. We would be outdoors and doing something useful, after all.

‘I thought you knew him,’ she continued. ‘You’re better placed to judge whether he’d be pleased to see us than I.’

‘Well, I’ve met him a few times, certainly, but I’d hardly say I know him. From the little I’ve seen I’d say that Cissy inherited her sense of humour and general good nature from him, so he might not be unhappy about our turning up out of the blue—’

‘There you are, then.’

‘—but I wasn’t asking him questions about his murdered friends when I spoke to him.’

‘We’ll be fine. Get your hat on.’
